The neighborhood owes a debt of thanks to
our neighbor Michael M. whose fast thinking,
"neighborhood watch" spirit, and followup
provided key information to help stop a wave a crime
that was happening in our neighborhood this fall (2008).
Thanks Michael!
Berkeley, California (Thursday, October 16, 2008) – At approximately 10:30pm on Wednesday, October 15th, Berkeley Police Patrol Officers stopped a Mitsubishi Lancer in an area that had recently been plagued by a series of pedestrian robberies (Virginia and Arch Streets). The officers stopped the vehicle because its license plate matched one provided to BPD by a citizen just six days earlier. The driver was arrested and found to be in possession of a loaded firearm.
The community member reported the vehicle as suspicious after he had received a community crime alert issued to residents of North Berkeley by the department’s Community Services Bureau warning of an increase in pedestrian style robberies in their neighborhood. The crime alert included the description of the above-related vehicle, which had been seen leaving the area following several of the robberies.
Davon Vigay 18, of Pinole was arrested and booked into the City of Berkeley Jail for 3 counts of Robbery, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Carrying a Concealed Weapon in a Vehicle, Carrying a Loaded Stolen Firearm, and Possession of a Firearm not Registered to the Possessor. Robbery Detectives believe Vigay is one of the felons responsible for a series of at least 10 robberies since early September.
Without the collaborative efforts of our officers, detectives, and participatory members of the community this felon might still be at large.
