We've had great success with cinnamon--it's simple, smells good, and ants hate it. ... sprinkle cinnamon inside and sugar outside. The ants are repelled by the cinnamon and attracted to the sugar. ... with the warming weather, they'll stay outside.
Other things ants don't like: diatomaceous earth, baking soda.

Wasp Nests
They generally leave the nest when winter comes, then I just wash the nest out of the eaves with a water spray from the hose. Another option, Ace has wasp spray. [from Tim Smyk, Kensington]
Is your fixture small enough to place a bag around it and seal it up? If you close off access the wasps inside will die. It will take a while. If you need the light on, use a clear bag. The wasps sleep inside at night, so bag the fixture after they go to sleep to avoid stings. To trap wasps we use the yellow traps in spring with pheromone attractant bait. ...I believe it is more effective to tune a piano after you move it than it is before you move it because moving a piano causes it to go out of tune.
